At Ocho Beer, we love a deep dive into brewing history, and our latest release, Old Dreadful, is a tribute to a classic style with a uniquely Tasmanian twist. If you’re a fan of malty, rich, and complex beers, you’re in for a treat – this is an Old English Ale like no other.
Old English Ale - A Taste of Tradition
Old English Ales were traditionally brewed strong and aged for months, allowing flavours to develop before being blended with younger beer by publicans. Old Dreadful stays true to this tradition, maturing for four months in French oak hogsheads from our mates down the road at Swinging Gate Wines. The result? A deep copper ale that’s as complex as it is delicious.
Tasting Notes
This beer is all about the malt. Thick, rich, and indulgent, yet finishing dry and dangerously moreish. Take a sip, and you’ll find brandy-soaked plum pudding, molasses, and a touch of savoury oak to keep things interesting. It’s a slow sipper, perfect for cooler nights or pairing with a hearty meal.
Brewed in Beaconsfield, Made to be Savoured
Brewed at Miners Gold Brewery in Beaconsfield, Tasmania, Old Dreadful brings together top-quality local ingredients with a time-honoured brewing approach. We used a carefully selected malt bill – pale malt, brown malt, carawheat, and shepherd’s delight – along with Tasmanian-grown Cascade hops and a traditional English Ale yeast to round it all out.
Why You’ll Love This Old English Ale
If you enjoy malt-forward beers with depth and complexity, Old Dreadful will be right up your alley. It’s a true Old English Ale experience, offering a glimpse into brewing history while standing strong as a unique, modern creation.
